Truth or a lie

Okay, I’ve always been a very trusting person. Some would say overly so. But a few experiences over the last few years have made me less willing to blindly trust. Older = wiser, I guess. However, there are a few things I have never trusted – the news and the internet. It just seems there’s either a bias or bad sources in both of those areas. Thus, I often ignore much of the info I hear. I know, I know – sticking my head in the sand may not be the best attitude, but it works for me. Now I have this friend who is the exact opposite – they believe everything they hear on the news and read on the internet. Not only that, they actively try to convince others this info is correct. Over the years, I, and others have gently tried to explain to this person why they shouldn’t be so gullible. Things often aren't what they seem and shouldn't be taken at face value. Alas and alack, nothing has changed with this person. Well, the other day, this person was trying to persuade me into believing the truth of the latest thing they had read on the internet. It was deeply offense to me on a personal level and I just snapped. I had had enough of the conspiracy theories and craziness and made sure I told this person so. Yikes, it so wasn’t me to do something so mean. Afterwards, I deeply regretted my words, yet there was no way I could take them back. The thing is, the next time I spoke with this person, they tried again to convince me why I was wrong about this issue. Why what they had read on the internet was correct, even if it didn’t come from a ‘legit’ news website. My words, harsh as they were, had meant nothing. You can imagine my surprise upon learning this. This person is so stuck in the mindset of thinking everything in print or on the news (even if that news is ‘Access Hollywood’, 'National Enquirer' or something similar) is real, nothing is ever going to change their mind. So how about you? Do you have areas in your life you can’t ever change but probably should? Do you even know what they are? Would you even acknowledge them if someone pointed them out? This is the time of year everyone is making resolutions – trying to reinvent themselves for the new year. Most fail and most should because they are unrealistic. Start small, take a little step, don’t try to change the world. Just try to make your little corner of it a better place…

This book is a slow and gentle read. When I was part way into the story, I had to double-check because this just didn't feel like a novel to me. This read more like a diary, Cora's private thoughts as she journaled out what she felt were the important moments of her life. Where is the best place to spill your guts?

The other day I sat down at a fast food restaurant to eat my lunch, the place was packed. A few tables over, a woman chatted on the phone, very loudly. I tried not to eavesdrop, however, that wasn't possible at the volume she spoke at. It soon became apparent the conversation leaned toward that of a rather personal nature. She talked about how her cousin had fantasies about her that were rather inappropriate. Then she moved on to discuss in detail about her attempts at online dating. And how all her matches were 'cowboys who fish' or the like.  As I sat in silence, munching, I debated about saying something to this woman about it probably would be best for her to not air her private affairs this way. But before I could do anything, she got to the end of her call and something rather unexpected happened. Okay, I was spending some time relaxing at a state park. A few days of nothing but enjoying the lake, the squirrels, turtles, deer and other wildlife. Recharging my batteries so to speak. When something odd happens. I’m sitting in my lounge chair, watching the squirrels dance in the trees. Occasionally glancing over at the corner of the lake I can see, checking to see how many turtles are on the log sunning themselves. Then a car drives into the campground loop, stopping on the side of the road. A young man gets out and pulls a big box out of the back seat. As he begins to pull things out of the of the box, I realize it’s a brand-new tent. Still has all the bits and pieces wrapped in plastic, which he’s now struggling with as close to the road as possible.
