Yoga Pants in the pub

I was in another town and at a pub the other day, chatting with a few other patrons.  Yes, they were a bit on the tipsy side – I was the only one having a lemonade (non-spiked of course).  Then this one couple comes in.  She informs her husband he has to order something other than his usual since they were on vacation and the area was known for their local brews.  You should’ve seen the look on his face, he clearly didn’t want to wade into the waters of strange IPAs.  He turns to me, I guess because I have what looks like a sympathetic face.  “Can you believe this?  This one's Pumpkinlicious.  This one's Taterale.  And don’t even get me started on the one called Yoga pants – is that supposed to mean it’s a light beer to keep you fitting in your yoga pants or it’s been strained through yoga pants and tastes like sweat?”  Uhm, I really didn’t know how to answer the poor man.  This seemed like it was something he needed to work out (pun intended) with his wife.  Yup, I think hipsters and millennials have taken over the beer market.  Not sure that’s a good thing, but, hey, I never drink beer so not my problem.  However, this problem isn’t isolated to beer.  Pumpkins spice has taken over the world, so to speak.  Not only is it in lattes, you can buy pumpkin sausage, pumpkin almonds, pumpkin whatever.  Then there’s all the maple or maple pecan stuff.  Please stop the madness already.  Why can’t food be food anymore?  Why must everything be new and improved with the flavor of the month?  So anyway, back to this unfortunate guy at the bar.  Okay, about then the 20 something bartender comes over, it was clear she’d heard his rant.  She says, with a sweet smile on her face, “Well, we do have vintage cocktails inspired by classic novels.”  And proceeds to tell him about gimlets, martinis and other such drinks – like a man in his 50’s had never heard about them.  The poor guy was starting to turn purple and then ordered a Bud Light, only to be told they were out.  Apparently, because of the recent hurricane, the supplier hadn’t shown up.  Oh my.  Sometimes we just can’t have what we want, no matter how much we have to sacrifice to get it.  So we have to compromise and settle on something we didn’t really want in the first place.  Yeah, Taterale is unlikely anyone’s first choice but there it is as a last resort.  But should we always settle?  Or should we just wait for another day and get what we really want?  This may be one of those questions that are impossible to answer…
