Crazy=memorable
I went to
coffee this morning with a friend of mine.
I made the mistake of asking how her Thanksgiving had gone. You see, this was the first time she and her
husband were hosting dinner in their home.
It was a big deal, she’s been stressing over it for months. I’d been giving her recipe tips, advice on
how not to over-complicate the meal, etc.
What I never considered was asking her if they checked to make sure
everything in the home was working properly.
You know like the electricity or the plumbing. So, there they were on Thanksgiving day with
all of the relatives. Enjoying a
wonderful meal, games for the kids, football on TV, great conversation. When there’s a flood in the bathroom. My friend’s husband rushes in to save the
day. However, turning off said toilet
did nothing. The water was still coming
from somewhere. Then tools got brought
out, walls got ripped open, until her husband emerged triumphant. Soaking wet, covered in goodness only knows
what (while still wearing his good clothes mind you), he proudly announced he knew what the problem was. Plus he knew how to
fix it. Drum roll please… However, since it was a holiday and Home
Depot was closed he couldn’t get the parts so there was no water in the house
until the next day. Uhm, yikes, some of
these relatives were supposed to spend the night. Turns out it wasn’t the incoming line to the
toilet at all. However, he’d destroyed
the on/off valve and so they couldn’t turn the water to the house back on. Nope, it turns out it was the drain under the sink –
something had chewed through the pipe. Of course that pipe had decided to give way
completely when my poor friend had a house full of guests. Yet, if things had gone perfectly would she
have remembered the day as well in say 10 years, 20? I don’t think so. It’s in the crazy unpredictable moments of
life we make our best memories. Easy
sailing is safe but it’s also boring. So here's to embracing the rats in the wall - at least just long enough to get a good laugh out of the chaos they've brought. Then, here's to buying enough poison to kill an army of them.
