Something new...
Do you know what zone heating/cooling is and how it
works? I was trying to explain the
concept to someone the other day and lets just say he really wasn’t getting
it. The whole idea that each room in a
house could be slightly different temperatures without closing doors was beyond
him. Or that you could just heat/cool rooms you were using to save power - let just say mind blown. He kept saying it was better to
have the whole house be the same temp in order to be “climatized.” However, he couldn’t ever give a good reason
why. Therefore, I arranged a meeting
with an HVAC installer so my friend could have an “expert” explain it since it
was clear he wasn’t believing me. Yeah,
he didn’t believe the HVAC guy either.
Then, I did a little show and tell and took him to a house with a zone
cooling system. He got really upset when
he discovered that one room had cold air blowing out of the wall and the next
room didn’t. Then when he set the two
room to the same temp, one room still didn’t have cold air blowing. I again explained how the system had the two
rooms working independently of each other.
Thus, they were on a different cycle – one was clearly on the fan only
cycle at the moment while the other was on the cooling cycle. If we waited a minute, it would be
reversed. Sure enough, a few minutes
later, the two rooms switched which one had the cool air. He was suspicious, he didn’t think it was a
good thing and was stuck thinking the old way of whole house systems were
better. Nothing I said about the fact
that zone systems use less energy, are more comfortable because each room can
be adjusted as needed and are cleaner because of no ductwork could change his
mind. Do you ever get caught up thinking
something's better just because it’s what you know? You don’t want to change for something new no
matter how much better it may be? But
that something new may be something great – you may miss out on a wonderful
thing. So embrace the new, change even
if for a moment to try it out. Don’t
just be a turtle refusing to come out of it’s shell to see the light of day. The sunshine is pretty terrific...
