Don't let this pretty face fool you...

Are women really the weaker sex?  Do they really know nothing about math, science, home repair, car repair, etc. - simply because they are women?  Personally, I don’t think so.  I have a brain and I like to use it.  I don’t like to have to hide in a box any time I’m having a conversation with a man.  I don’t like pretending to be dumb.  And when a man tells me, “Honey, it’s not your job…”, well, who cares if I don’t get paid to do whatever?  It doesn’t mean I’ve never done the task before.  Or that, given some time, I can’t figure out how to solve a certain problem.   I’m tired of being told in so many words I’m a stupid little girl.  I’m tired of being told in so many words to just look pretty.  And heaven forbid I try to tell a man why I think he’s going about a math, science, home repair or car repair problem the wrong way.  No, I’m done biting my tongue and saying nothing.  I don’t care if your fragile male ego can’t handle a woman who knows something.  Fine, this may be why I’ve been single most of my adult life.  But I believe in the ‘KISS’ model of life – Keep It Simple Stupid!  If I see you doing something the hard way or in an incredibly impossible way, I’m going to say something.  It doesn’t matter if you are a man, woman or Martian.  Yell at me, call me stupid to my face, I don’t care.  I’ve learned a thing or two in all my years.  The most important thing I’ve discovered?  I’m pretty darn smart.  Stop treating me like I’m not.  I wasn’t put here on this planet to be eye candy.  Sure, I don’t have a fancy degree.  Sure, I haven’t had the job experience.  But I know how to read, write, solve math problems and still cook an amazing dinner.  I’m done letting anyone think otherwise.

This book is a bit of a diamond in the rough. However, there's quite a bit of value contained within the pages. While this isn't the typical type of book I read, I found myself interested in the author's journey.  So, what do you think of when you hear 'stepmother?' The fairy tale one who's evil? This book is a slow and gentle read. When I was part way into the story, I had to double-check because this just didn't feel like a novel to me. This read more like a diary, Cora's private thoughts as she journaled out what she felt were the important moments of her life. While it didn't appear anything dramatic happened, this tale winds around the simple mountain life. Hardships, trials, family, and faith all weave together to mold this woman's heart and mind. Most interesting were the bits of outside events that filtered into this isolated community - the Civil War, WWI, the Spanish Flu, to name a few. This story is reminiscent of several others I've read over the years. Accounts of old-fashioned values that were the backbone of America for so long. These pockets of society which were often shunned because of their 'backward' ways. The other day I sat down at a fast food restaurant to eat my lunch, the place was packed. A few tables over, a woman chatted on the phone, very loudly. I tried not to eavesdrop, however, that wasn't possible at the volume she spoke at. It soon became apparent the conversation leaned toward that of a rather personal nature. She talked about how her cousin had fantasies about her that were rather inappropriate. Then she moved on to discuss in detail about her attempts at online dating. And how all her matches were 'cowboys who fish' or the like.  As I sat in silence, munching, I debated about saying something to this woman about it probably would be best for her to not air her private affairs this way. But before I could do anything, she got to the end of her call and something rather unexpected happened.
